App to Detect Counterfeit Magic Cards. "Real vs. Fake"
I built a Real vs. Fake detector for Magic: The Gathering cards.
This is my first proof-of-concept version -- I finally got it running and this is a recording of my first session to test the results.
This app uses a neural network to classify images of card backs and report whether or not it believes the card is fake.
This is not a foolproof method of detecting counterfeit cards, as it will fail on at least two types of counterfeits that I'm aware of. As with all tests to authenticate cards, this can only be one tool in your toolbox and should never be relied upon to be foolproof.
That said, I'm impressed by the speed and accuracy of this detector, and I'm excited to share the results.
It currently requires that we use a specific king of microscope webcam, because it's trained to look at dot size and scales. This model of microscope is readily available as a 40x-1000x USB microscrope -- you can get it from Amazon / E-bay / Walmart for less than $20.
This is only proof-of-concept, and I don't yet know how it will be deployed, but feel free to comment with your suggestions and ideas for if and how this would be useful to you.
